THE STANFORD POWWOW

May 10-12th was the 53rd Stanford Powwow. According to the Stanford Report, “Stanford’s Powwow celebrates the university’s diverse Native American and Indigenous cultures on campus.” Dancers, singers, and artists from hundreds of tribes participated. “Empowering Indigenous Women”, was this year’s theme. The Powwow celebrated traditions, ancestors, and mothers.

I began attending Stanford’s Powwow in the late nineties. I’ve attended around ten powwows since then. Along with a variety of friends, I keep coming back because I enjoy the dancing, drumming and the pageantry. Dancers and singers come from various tribes across the United States, Canada, Mexico, and the Pacific Islands. It’s a joyful environment shared by nearly 10,000 visitors over the weekend.
