Jon Musson is the third of four sons raised by Rick and Sylvia Musson.  Rick was one of my closest friends since 1986.  He passed away in 2007 before he had a chance to see his son Jon become Head Varsity Basketball Coach of the high school all four of his sons attended, St. Joseph Notre Dame in Alameda, California.

Jon is a second-year head coach who started his basketball career as a St. Joseph player.  Patiently learning as an assistant coach over 20 years at St. Joseph, Jon became Head Coach after Northen California’s winningest high school basketball coach, Don Lippi retired.  Coach Lippi achieved four State Championships with St. Joseph and accumulated over 900 career wins.

A few decades ago, I attended a St. Joseph’s basketball game with Jon’s dad Rick.  His oldest son Jeremy was playing alongside Jason Kidd, the future Dallas Mavericks Head Coach.  For a school with only 400+ students, St. Joseph has produced a major league baseball player, an Olympic distance runner and several successful collegiate athletes.  For one year, another NBA player, Damian Lillard attended St. Joseph.

Last season, 2023-2024, Jon’s first as team Head Coach, St. Joseph had 12 wins and 14 losses.  That was an improvement over their 2022-2023 season’s record of 5 wins and 20 losses.  His second year produced a winning season with 21 wins and 9 losses and a championship trophy.

I missed the regular season games, but I saw four games in the post season.   The first two were exciting wins that led to a BCL East Championship. 

St. Joseph won their first game in the next round against Fremont’s Washington High, but lost the following game to high scoring Berkeley High School. 

A good season overall for St. Joseph as they continue to improve under Coach Jon Musson.

Rick would be very proud of Jon.  He has worked hard and long to achieve his goal as a head coach.   

Families were what mattered most to Rick and Sylvia.  Rick would be proud of all his sons as they have grown up to be fine, hardworking men with beautiful and happy families.
